Assessment of Non-timber Forest Product (NTFP) Value Chains in Georgia
Start Date: 2022-10-25
End Date: 2023-05-31
Region: Caucasus,
Country: Georgia,
Client: Government of Georgia
Origin of Funding: GIZ
Budget: 33,850 GEL

The project is part of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit’s (GIZ) program "Enabling the Implementation of Georgia's Forest Sector Reform - ECO.Georgia" that aims to support the Government of Georgia (GoG) in implementing its transformational forest sector reform agenda to bring the entire nation’s forests under sustainable management.

The objective of the project is to deliver a value chain analysis (VCA) of existing and potential non-timber forest products (NTFPs) in three target regions of Georgia: Guria; Mtskheta-Mtianeti; and Kakheti. This entails assessing the collection, handling, operation, and marketing practices of selected priority products.

To study sets out to identify major challenges, assess the current situation, and distinguish opportunities in the NTFP sector in target municipalities to provide concrete recommendations for the development of value chains. These recommendations will aim to enhance the social inclusion of local households and SMEs in the NTFP value chains, as well as product diversification, product quality, work safety, marketing, and sustainable development of the value chains in a gender-balanced way.

To achieve the project objectives, the PMC RC project team will:

  • Conduct a desk review on a pool of promising NTFP value chains in target municipalities;
  • Conduct interviews with value chain actors and other key stakeholders;
  • Develop a resource assessment report for NTFPs in municipalities of Kakheti and Mtskheta-Mtianeti regions;
  • Develop a final assessment report of the identified NTFP value chains in Guria, Kakheti, and Mtskheta-Mtianeti regions; and

Present findings and recommendations to the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia.
